About a year ago, I made the swap to the Mac, an IMac. Screen quality is faultless. With my Windows laptop on its last legs, I decided I'd once again go the Mac route and have purchased a 15" Macbook Pro with a Retina screen.

Granted, I've been spoilt with the IMac, and I've only started using a MBP last night, but I'm not blown away by the screen quality. I suspect I am being picky and expecting too much from a 15" screen, but despite this, I thought I'd ask for the thoughts of other MBP retina users.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know what you were expecting from the rMBP. The screen isn't going to be super saturated and loads of bright colours. What it does give is a very sharp image. If you'd used one of the older machines, like I did ,you would have noticed how much sharper the image is. This is very useful when using a laptop for photography. I'm not the only person to notice how sharp the images appear ( in Lightroom) several no photographers have commented as well.

This is useful , especially when shooting tethered, as you can judge the image quickly , without the need to zoom in as often. The screen also calibrates better than my older MBP. Whilst this were good I found a slight warm bias previously as it seems the system was unable to get the full blue output ( Only marginal but still noticeable ) .Now i get a excellent match to the iMac, so good I can colour match object on th rMBP and be confident in the results on the iMac.

As does the office suite on OSX, looks low resolution and horrendous

Very happy with mine. My main use is tethering with Capture One Pro 8 and have no issues at all... sharp and accurate. A big improvement over my previous 13" Air.

Is the retina screen much better than the previous?

Had mine about a week and I'm very impressed by the screen. Photos look amazing on it to be fair. I upgraded from a 2010 MBP and now looking at the screen on that one looks poor.

Although as others had said, if a program is not retina-compatible then they can look awful. Also screen content is 'scaled' as if the screen were actually 1440 x 900 (so that on-screen items are the same size as they would be on an equivalently-sized non-retina screen). This means text on websites for example looks awesome, but avatars on forums look low-res and pixellated.

Oh yeah just to add: if you're internet is fast enough try looking at some of the 4k videos on youtube. That certainly shows off the screen.

Ok. I've had more time to play and on the whole feeling much better about it.

I think your points about scaling are correct. 800x600 images I was examining at the time don't look great. Hi res look fantastic. It is almost like the 800x600 images are being scaled.
