Hi, I just placed an order for a Canon 600D with kit lens and I want to invest in an all around lens, I previously had a Canon 550D with 50mm and Sigma 17-70mm, I had the 17-70 mm on all the time and never really used the 50mm but wasnt that impressed with the 17-70mm compared to the kit lens.

Im looking for a wide angle lens but I dont really want to lose the zoom, although im starting to think that Ive never actually used the zoom end of any of my lenses:thinking: so its slightly confusing.

I was thinking 15-85mm which is expensive at over £400 but im willing to invest if I know it will be the only Lens I will buy since it covers most lengths - but I was thinking, if I am willing to spend that much then for just a bit more I could get a 17-40L or a super wide angle lens such as the tokina or sigma 11-16/10-20. (I was also thinking about getting the Samyang 8mm Fisheye at half the price of the other lens and then just use my kit lens too)

So, any suggestions for whats best for a hobbyist, sorry for the long confusing post :cuckoo:

15-85. 17-40 is not good value for money on a crop.

When we had a 7D, the 15-85 was on it 99% of the time.

Agreed. You can't beat the 15-85 as a general purpose lens. Very sharp, well made, fast silent AF. Canon also do 18-135 and 18-200, although these may be more versatile they are not quite as sharp. If you don't enlarge your prints too much, you may find the 18-135 a good option.

Thanks for your replies guys! I think I want to get something wider than 18mm as I dont really use the zoom that much, although it could get handy one day I dont think it really needs to go beyond 85mm. I think I may have to go with the 15-85! :)

How about the idea of the Samyang 8mm for £200 and buying a Sigma 17-70 again for just under £200? hmm, would the samyang become unused after a while hmm, decisions decisions!

Sigma 17 - 70 for under £200 sounds like a great deal.

I just paid £277 for one as an upgrade to the kit lens on the 550D, looks like a good improvement to me after a few test shots. Focus is noisy, but pictures look good, in which way were you not impressed?

Firts expensive lens I have bought though, so maybe a 15 - 85 would be even better?

Have a search on flickr for groups that cover both lenses...

The 15-85 is both longer and wider than the 17-70, has faster af and silent motor...

I would also say it is sharper and has higher contrast...

You get what you pay for....

Absolutely love my 15-85, good IQ & range.

I only take it off to fit my 100-400L.

Different to do a like for like comparison on IQ but you can't really see a lot of difference between IQ on either.

It was the 17-70 without OS HSM that I had and it was second hand for £130 but I always had a feeling it had back/front focus issues, so maybe thats why I wasn't impressed, but I did like the f2.8 and wide side of it.

Yh I think the 15-85 will suit me better too.

I guess its going to be the 15-85! Thanks guys, I might test it out somewhere before I make the buy though as £400 is a lot for a lens!

Cough....sorry 400 is not a lot for a lens....

Seriously though good luck with your choice...

Haha well compared to other lenses its not but for someone who is only doing it for fun/hobby it is. Plus I just paid £450 for a camera, 2 months after losing £1000 worth of equipment, so even a memory card is a lot when you put it into perspective

Hello,

was it stolen or lost through damage??

i know the focal range is smaller but the sigma 17/50 OS EX LENS may suit i moved from the canon17/85 to this.. the difference is only a few steps either way i do have it coupled with the canon 70/200 is .......................

The thing is, I'm not sure why but I would like a bigger difference of range to the kit lens, so I dont like the idea of spending £400+ for a similar lens even though its miles ahead of the kit lens. :bonk:
