100mm F2.8 L IS - should it rattle (is it an is feature)

I've just picked up the 100mm f2.8L IS lens - what a lovely bit of kit.

One thing I've noticed is it rattles when not in use. It looks like the bottom set of optics moving about if i move it around when not on a body.

Is this normal of IS? I figured they'd "park" when not in use.

When you say 'rattles' do you mean like a feint 'crackling' sound?
My 55-250mm and 18-55mm IS does this when switched on and in use.
Other users on here have posted this so I take it as 'normal'
 
Nothing to worry about Jon, mine rattles too.

wontolla, the sound isn't when in use, it's when it's off the body. If you shake it side to side you can hear it clunking.

Bob, thank you for the reassurance :) Can you see your bottom element wobbling around too?

Hmmmm, hadn't shaken mine since I got it a week ago, but it does rattle a bit, doesn't it? I wonder if it's the stabilisation unit?

Haven't seen any comments from Canon?

It's a cracking lens, though!!

if you shake it with the back cap off you can actually see the bottom element moving about and banging against the sides... well you can on mine at least :'(

AHH I see, yes mine does that a bit! It looks like it,s the zoom part of the barrel on my 5-250mm IS. But that IS normal for this lens!!
 
Well, I've just had a fairly good look at mine, and it doesn't look loose, I can't see any movement in any element, but I've only given a gentle shoogle to the lens. I've looked front to back and vice versa while jiggling the lens and although I can hear a bit of a rattle, which I suspect is the stabilising feature when it's not energised, I can't really see any glass movement.
Let's wait for Bob to come on again, I suppose there aren't many of us yet with this lens on the forum.

Well, I've shaken mine like a demented castanet soloist and can't see any physical movement of the rear element....sounded wonderful though. I then stuck my Pec-pad adorned thumb on the glass whilst shaking and couldn't feel any movement either....the sound is still the same though so I have to assume it is the IS group (two elements further in) that's got the DT's.

How much experience of demented castanet soloists do you have, Bob?:lol::lol:you been nipping over the border to Spain again?? I suspect there may be something wrong with the OP's lens?? i don't think an element should be loose, anyway, I'd get it checked by Elstree
