ANOTHER topic about a lens. (sorrrryy!)
I've just bought a 50d at last (should be arriving next week) :D

I have finally decided after using my Canon 28-200mm that 200mm isn't long enough!!
I'm after a good quality lens to shoot -
Garden wildlife, Wildlife parks, Country walks etc.
Probably second hand.

High IQ.
Minimum of about 100mm.
Up to around 300-400mm. (maybe 500mm) (but with a range that wide am I compromising IQ)
IS ? - will be shooting hand held where possible, tripod only if necessary.
Brand - something of a high quality.
Budget - £450ish.

OR a lens that is generally known as a 'very good wildlife lens'
Please help!
(promise I'll stop posting multiple threads once I've found one :p )

Am I right in thinking if I'm looking for a more 'pro' lens the 70-300mm isn't one to go for?

Looking for advice from anyone that's used and can recommend a lens fitting most of the criteria I'm after.

EDIT:
From what I've seen the Canon 100-400mm L is going to be out of my budget :(
And the...Bigma 50-500mm. Is it not alittle pointless to have such a vast range of focal length? Just a question...

I'm not the best person to answer as I haven't used any of them, but have shortlisted them all at one time or another.

It depends on what you mean by pro...I'm not sure if there is an absolute definition..i.e. weatherproof, USM, non rotating front element, internal focus, non EF-s, maybe warranty?

I've read the 70-300 isn't the greatest at the longer end, its not weatherproof, doesn't have internal focus nor USM. So it might not be recognised as 'pro' however some shots I've seen on here from that lens look very good indeed.

Its a tough call on that budget - i wouldn't rule out the 70-300. The 55-250 Ef-s should also be in the running at the lower end of the budget for around £160 in my opinion else you need to look around £1k I'd say.

Any purchase in photography is generally a compromise when you list specific criteria :lol:

By 'pro' I just meant, not your usual, cheap, beginner/amateur lens.
Something highly looked upon as a decent wildlife lens that is capable of high quality images.

From memory in your previous thread your conclusion was you wanted IS / OS, the Canon 100-400L was more than you are prepared to pay and the Sigma was the one you are interested in?
A quote you made in your previous thead 'Budget - tbh I will save for something 2ndhand untill I can afford it. But don't wish to spend more than £500~ on something only used for as a hobby'
Sorry mate but there is an old saying 'you can't have your cake and eat it', if you want over 300mm with IS then you will have look at spending around £550.
Otherwise go for a Canon 70-300 IS, it's a good lens for the money and I don't think anything in it's price range out performs it.
Without sounding rude or sarcastic, there isn't a magical lens going to appear out of thin air that hasn't already been suggested in your first thread :)

Yes I apologise for starting multiple threads on the same subject.
It's just the previous thread I started was covering too wide a range.
I had since decided that 200mm is not long enough.
And thought starting a new thread would keep everything more simple/uptodate.
I know now that maybe I shouldn't have, sorry :(
