I've priced a 1000ws M series head with a 22" beauty dish and stand at £500 ish

I've priced an enistein with standard reflector only at about that.

I have about £500 right now

Next month I'll be buying either a vagabond or an xplorer depending on which head I buy.

I'm stuck on the crazy cost of pcb mods (a grid for a beauty dish costs more than the dish) and the slightly lower power (though not too fussed here)

against the good ct consistency and potentially amazing flash durations when I might have some skateboarding coming up and I'm really feeling the sportrait thing. The ability to go down to silly low power levels is very useful for me also as I will frequently be combining it with speedlights

I'm very much leaning towards the einstein but will be completely swayed if I can find cheaper mods, dish, grids and maybe a big softbox (just cos I can :p) with the softbox likely coming much later
 
eeeey US ebay will chip me mods for about 60 quid each, maybe less if they combine postage (which is a fair killer)

Do light modifiers get taxed on import?

anything over £18 per package gets taxed on import.

Hold out for a safari? If you're looking at this + a tronix pack, it'll be the same price long run, just need 1 event to bring you up to speed cash wise... the safari will be a nicer, neater, waaaay more portable solution than a bluddy heavy monobloc and mains battery pack...

Personally the Einstein would be more beneficial. Primarily because the Einstein can be AC powered, the intelligent circuitry doodad that adapts to 110v or 240v is a very useful thing, meaning that if your shooting in a location that has mains power, there's no need to use up the juice in the Vagabond, just plug the Einstein straight into the wall outlet and Robert's your fathers brother.

Safari runs off the battery only.

The only downside that I can see at the moment is that Buff gear isn't available yet, there's still some time before orders will be fluid.

yeah that is a thing with me for safari as whenever I use it mains it'll be working recharge/discharge cycles unnecessary and probs mean I need a spare batt for safety

as of right now I can buy an einstein but not a vagabond, next month I can make the whole order so its not a terrible thing :D
 
oh, didn't realise that the safari doesn't have a mains in socket into the pack to use it as a mains generator :( boo

ranger would be perfect apart from elinchrom mount, retarded 7mm umbrella slot...and the price :(

The Elinchrom mount is excellent. Holds even the largest box rock solid.

Retarded? The only lighting system that has the best position for the umbrella hole is Elinchrom. 7mm is no longer a problem if it ever was.

You get what you pay for. There are reasons they cost more. There are reasons they are used much more widely in the profession.
 
quite seriously considering waiting for the AB as it is a better mains powered flash than the safari

and a better battery powered strobe than the elemental

+it has various other advantages

I also don't like battery powered (or mains tbh) pack and heads as they mean big cables in the dammed way everywhere which I've noticed with elinchrom

chill a bit kris, my only issue mount wise is the einstein not being s fit which means I can get reasonably good mods cheap as chips

In my opinion, no it's not, it's worse than the balcar and anything else available.

Elinchrom's biggest Achilles heel, second in line is the prices of their accesories, may aswell shoot Profoto which is a league above imo.

As for cheap mods for balcar mounts, that's a simple one to answer, basically most mounting systems can be bypassed eith a speedring adaptor, Germany is pretty good for cheap stuff too, here's a range of light shaping tools that come supplied with the balcar speedring adaptor;

that looks like a great shop mate I'm guessing taxes will be less silly within the eurozone than getting stuff from US
 
Tom - we'll just have to disagree, though to be honest I've not used much else apart from Elinchriom.

You dont have to use genuine Eli accessories, though they are excellent quality. As you say, just use a universal speedring. Viewfinder photography have some new stuff in that is available in universal speedring for most fittings.

I meant chill because you seem a bit tense and misunderstood me, I have no issues with any mounts for what I'm doing if theres a lot of stress on the mount it will end in tears as its for 80% location use :D

There are no extra taxes as it's a store within the EU. I've spent a few grand with them and the service is dandio. Some of the gear is pretty cheapo but it's a 'what do you expect at those prices' kinda deal.
