1000D vs 40D...

It is. Bigger, better, brighter, sharper, nicer smelling, tastes nicer, heavier, more sturdy, less like a toy, is kind to animals, with plenty more features that you didn't even know you wanted.

My girlfriend uses the 1000D and she loves it... Personally, I think it's the best compact camera that Canon make! ;)

Given the choice between the 1000D and the 40D though, it's a bit of a no-brainer... The 40D is a fantastic camera. So much so that I flatly refuse to part with mine even though I've got the 7D now. :D

What exactly is THAT much better on the 40D?
9 AF points instead of 7?
Higher burst rate?
As someone who would like to upgrade from the "entry level" DSLR,and is confused as hell as to what would be worthwhile,am genuinely interested..
For me-The only real thing that matters is that the camera isnt a bi**h to use,and has good IQ.
(My daughter has already laid claim to the 1000D...)

I would have thought, off the top of my head (i'm a nikon fan so not sure about 'the darkside')

better performance in low light - so you can push out ISO 3200 or at least 1600 and still get good pics
Faster burst for sports/wildlife photography
More megapixels
A whole host of smaller but very important changes like dust cleaning (although not sure this has on the 40D), better weatherproofing, better and more solid build etc.
better IQ

to name less than half i would imagine!

Its only 'better' if it suits your needs better.
My wife uses a 400D because for her a 1D or a 50D (or even a 10D) isnt better, they are too big and heavy and tbh the shots she takes dont require the 'extras' those cameras can provide. She uses hers mainly in bright sunlight, so Iso performance isnt a problem, doesnt take 2000 shots in a weekend, so battery life, build quality etc arent important. I could go on, I'm sure you get where I'm coming from.
Dont be fooled because something is more expensive or has less numbers it has to be better for what YOU want/need.

Although an L lens is obviously better than anything :)

I have just made this exact upgrade from 1000D to 40D.

I've got to say.........the upgrade is a worthwhile upgrade but it isn't as noticable as some might expect it to be for the money. The big difference is the FPS for successive shooting, but like some have mentioned, this may not be needed for what you shoot. Other functionalities like the jog wheel and LCD display are nice added bonuses, and it has spot metering which 1000D does not. I think many upgrade to the 40D because they find the size fits in their hand better.......I actually find the 1000D a good size and not too bulky, but I have small hands. The 40D does feel a lot better built though, and larger/heavier lenses do feel more balanced on it than on the 1000D.

Don't expect the image quality to be much different from the 1000D though, this will be more dependant on the lens you are using. Shots I took with my 17-55mm on both bodies, were just as good as each other in normal conditions. The difference I've found is that the better body allows you to utilitise the lens more whilst you're shooting, like better ISO capabilities and quick shooting.

My advice is, don't expect the body upgrade to transform image quality, but it offers more functionality to the user. It's only a worthwhile upgrade if you have already invested in top quality lenses and have some extra cash you can spare on a body upgrade. Otherwise, I'd definitely upgrade lenses first, and keep the 1000D until you have spare funds.
