1000D tethered

Yes it can be done. You can use the Canon software that came with the camera to shot tethered or if you have it Lightroom can also be used to shot tethered.

With the canon DPP software just run the EOS utility with the camera connected with the USB cable >>>> select remote shot >>>> select where you want to save the image to (small folder icon)

adjusting shutter speed etc on the camera will show on the control panel on your computer or you can use the computer control panel to adjust.

When you take pictures a preview will show the image and also DPP will start up and show the image is saved etc and can be opened and anything as normal can be adjusted.

Rob has got it spot on. Re the USB I have 2 x 5 meter cables with connectors, one with a booster built in. This set up works well for me on a 5D2 when shooting tethered.

Cool, what booster? I like to shoot the birds in this way, but I cannot get above 5m on the USB without drop-outs.

usb has a length limit of 5m but you can get around this by putting a powered usb hub in as an extender, or use a proper usb extender over, say, cat5. That way you can get 100m

I know about using a hub to extend the length, but Kemble's response made it sound like the cable had a 'hub' built in. I.e. I wouldn't need to supply power half-way along the length.

My best 'shooting position' is unfortunately in the kitchen, hence a lack of a decent number of power sockets.
