I reckon the answer to this will be "Your camera's knackered", but just thought I'd see if any knowledgeable folk can offer any advice before I attempt to persuade the Hong Kong retailer to replace it for me. :help:

I went to Chester Zoo today, and got some shots I was quite pleased with. Shortly into the visit my shutter went "click", then didn't "clunk". I thought the shutter was broken, but after removing the battery and replacing it it started working again.

Then I was trying to shoot something in a vivarium, and it seemed to be focusing fine (giving me the beep), but the shutter wouldn't work. It was the wrong lens for the purpose anyway, so I swapped to the 50mm and refocused, and took the photo without issue.

All appeared to be well at this point, and was when I arrived home. I've now been going through the shots on the camera again, and the screen went a bit pixelated, with weird blown out pixels and such, then it gave the error "unable to play back image". Switched off and removed battery, replaced it, and all was well again. For a few minutes.

Now the display goes pixalated, then blank. Then I take the battery out and replace it. Switch the camera on, and all is fine. Then blank again. :bonk: The camera is obviously screwed. I've removed the "Linkdelight" grip, and the problem is still there, so it can't be that, which I originally hoped it was. Swapped lenses (not that I expected that to do anything), swapped batteries, and swapped memory cards. Definitely the camera.

It's a refurbed model from a Hong Kong seller (:ashamedofmyself: ), so what are the chances of me getting it sorted through them (NIL, I suspect)? It's about 5 months old.

So I'm thinking I should chalk it down to experience and buy a new camera. Or pay for this one to be repaired. £££

Not sure if there is much I could do to fix it myself, but felt I should share my pain. I'll not be going out to photograph seals tomorrow, as I intended.

This is a really long post, so I apologise. I'll upload my successful zoo pics in due course. :D

could just be the display screen whats on your memory card?

Don't just write it off, Try contacting the seller and see what happens, failing that I can recommend Norfolk Camera Centre in Dereham for repairs, I have just had a 40D repaired there, 60 quid fixed a knackered mirror box and serviced it.

If you don't want to go that route you could always claim on the house insurance.

Just the photos from the zoo. I tried a different SD card, and shot a few random photos of my TV earlier, then it did exactly the same thing when I was reviewing them.

Could it just be the display, if the autofocus was working, but the shutter wasn't? I don't know what's connected to what in the camera, so don't really have any idea what I'm talking about!

One point I've just remembered; I went into the butterfly house for a few minutes, and it's incredibly humid in there. I only realised after a few minutes that I had the camera around my neck. I left and cleared the lens, but could condensation have got in and done damage?

Does the 1000d come with a video cable, so you can connect the camera to the tv to preview images etc, if it does mess around with the camera normally till it starts playing up, then plug in the cable and see if its the same on the tv

Good suggestion.

I'll root around in my bag and see what wires reside in there. Not sure if there's a TV one or not. Thanks.

Off to bed now. Let's see what tomorrow brings...

Quite possibly. The big camera names make a point of sealing their pro-spec cameras so that they can be used pretty much anywhere, but this sort of protection is the first thing that gets left out on models lower down the food chain, in order to save money.

Especially given that your 1000D appears to be behaving itself now, I would't be at all surprised if some moisture had got in and temporarily caused it to throw a hissy fit.

My 5D mk II is weatherproofed to some degree, but I wouldn't risk taking it into a hothouse..

Also check your firmware version.
Canon now offer version 1.0.6 for the 1000D which addresses issues which sound similar to yours.
Doesn't do any harm to upgrade the firmware anyway!

Sorry to hear about the problems, Scott. Fingers crossed it self-corrects or you can get it fixed.

The 1000D is not that fragile. I've taken mine into a greenhouse, walk through light rain and snow.

Agree I took my 350D into a greenhouse and had similar problems a few days later it worked fine and is still going at least 2 years on :)
