Hey Guys,

Have any of you used your cameras in Dry Bags during water sport events? Such as kayaking?

I've just taken it up and want to take my camera with me, went for a 2.5 mile trip up the local canal today and wished I had my camera.

Cheers,
Steve.

There's no such thing as 100% dry bag... You're always taking some miniscule risk of failure, or leakage.

However Ortlieb produce the best drybags around including specialised camera cases (See here) If properly used and maintained, those would protect you camera against immersion and splashes for flat water kayaking and canoeing.

Coming from a white water background, I personally prefer to use Peli Cases (see here) or Otterboxes (see here) which provide guaranteed protection against immersion, dust and shock.

As suggested above, it is always a risk. Personally when kayaking I put my camera in a small padded lowepro bag and then put the whole thing in a LOMO dry bag (http://www.ewetsuits.com/). Then it gets stuffed between my legs in my boat. It doesn't give very quick access to the camera and can't be accessed when on the water. Doesn't really bother me as I am normally paddling whitewater and you have to get out to take photos in that situation anyway.

For 'fully' dry, I would certainly go for a Peli case. Consider sizes very carefully as they can come in funny sizes.

I know a lot of surf photogs use something similar, but I think they are actually hard cases rather than a bag at the back! They are also a lot more expensive!

That reminds me, I need to get an underwater disposable for my holiday in a few weeks!

Aquapac's are good for things that are relatively inconsequential, (we used them for site radio's when I was working as an outdoor ed instructor) but they have a tendency to break when cold.

If you're paddling flat water, or have something else to protect it when not in use... it wouldn't be a bad thing... but I'd be mighty wary if I were you.
