Having just got this lens only a few weeks back i am not sure if i made a mistake buying it.
I was out yesterday & shot quite a few photos but not very happy with the results.
Maybe its just me & cant get to grips with it or maybe i should have gone for something a bit on the lighter side, not sure if i will keep this lens or not.

The 100-400 is a fantastic lens! What are you not happy about with the shots you took? Can you give a bit more detail of the problem and maybe post some examples? With a bit of practice you should be able to get excellent results but it does require correct technique :)

So what exactly is the problem? Are you asking for help and advice, and if so what kind of help and advice?

Post some pics so we can see and explain what the problem is. Used correctly it's a great lens but as said it does have to be used properly. If handheld it does eat light:bonk:

I agree with the others, it is a great lens, you might want to use a monopod until you get used to the weight (and certainly if the light is less than optimal) and practice, practice, practice your technique hand holding it, The other thing is don't use a UV filter unless it is a top quality one. I made that mistake and was not happy to start with, tested it with and without and realised the filter was causing my problems.
Go to a zoo on a sunny day with a monopod, you'll fall in love......

I think the white balance is slighty out and they look slighty oof it would be better if you post a pic on here and let us know the exif data

Thanks bob.:)

Hers' a quick sharpen (and resize to 800) of the first one....nothing else done

Edit....I'll remove it from my gallery tomorrow if that's okay?

Thanks bob, appreciate that,np with photo, you can keep it if you want.:D

What were you expecting jock?

I was introduced to the 100-400 at a Canon Experiance seminar. One tip I was given is that where you naturally want to put your supporting hand on the lens is on the focus ring. Therefore it's easy to knock it out of focus. Other than that I can't complain about it.

For info these were all taken with the 100-400 on a 400D:

Thanks m8,they have picked me up out of the depths of despair today, any chance you could give me the settings you used on them.:)

Rather than list them all, This will give you a flavour....

Pelicans one Piles f/11 1/640 Sec 100mm Iso 200

Ospreys f/9 1/500 Sec 400mm Iso 200

Tourist and Gator f/8 1/200 sec 45mm Iso 200 (probably with the 24-105 lens)

Open Mouth f/5 1/80 Sec 250mm Iso 200
Closed Mouth f/5.6 1/320 Sec 370mm Iso 200

Thanks for that, much appreciated.:)

Not much wrong with these pics, I notice from the Castle esplanade pic the WB is on manual, perhaps thats the cause of the blue tinge, but if the photos are taken in raw then its easily fixed. The shot down to Frederick street is pretty good, thats a fair distance down from the castle and at 120mm FL its not bad.

I've got the same lens and would'nt swap it, persevering with it you will get better, if I can do it anyone can, it does need a hand under the lens when shooting to steady it. I hardly use the monopod or tripod with it now.
A couple shots below were taken with the lens

Cheers frank,i will keep at it i dont like giving up,thats a couple of good shots you got there,i really like the first one, thats sharp.:)

It was taken up at a bird hide at Bavelaw marsh up past balerno, its a public hide so you could practice till your hearts content or you start feeling like a brass monkey LOL

I felt like that yesterday at the castle.:D

I have this lens and think its a brilliant lens once you get to know it.With any lens it as its limits.Just stick with it and try different apertures and you will find the sweet spot of that lens.I have used it handheld to photograph birds and am more than pleased with the results give it a chance.

Thanks Kaz,i will keep at it & i am sure i will get there.:):D

I was given a loan of a 100-400 for a day when on holiday in Skye and carrying that around with me as well as my kit bag just put me off the idea of the extra reach it would give.

It is a heavy beast, but a great lens.:)
