Oooh I've just done something silly, I've just been into jessops and tried a canon 100-400L with a 1.4tc and loved it!!
I went in just to try not expecting to like the pump focus but it was silky smooth and so clear felt solid and very comfortable!!
Next stop sigma 50-500 it's got alot to live up to!!!

I had a really tiny Clementine today, each segment was really diddy - tasted good though.

I would go for the Canon, over the sigma.

I know a lot of people lov their sigma, but i think their q/c is not alway great :)

The quality control of the 100-400L has been notoriously questionable as well. Mine's fine, and apparently it's gotten a lot better in recent years, but you're really not risking anything more going for a sigma (unless you buy used with no warranty) If you get an off copy you can return it to the seller or send it off to sigma to be calibrated. Just pick the lens you find best for your budget.

I get on great with my 100-400L, but from reading lots of reviews and user reports, the 50-500 OS definitely deserves consideration as well ;)

By which you mean a handful of people have commented about it on the internet, and the hundreds of thousands of happy users haven't.

And his copy was fine, just like mine was before I foolishly sold it! I believe most of the reported 'issues' are mostly user-error, or simply because they reflect the huge numbers of the 100-400L that are about, many of them very old now. I would guess that the 100-400L has sold more than any other single Canon zoom over the years, apart from the kit lenses!

To the OP, be aware that the 100-400L won't AF properly with an extender/telecon, or any lens that goes over f/5.6.

Yes I was aware of the af issues where as the guy in jessops wasn't, he was just wanting to sell me the lens and tc which would of been about £1800 + insurance for an extra £130 needless to say I didn't jump at that!!

That's not totally true. The majority of cameras require a aperture of f5.6 or faster for the AF to work properly. However the 1D and 1DS series will AF with lenses with a maximum aperture of F8, including the 100 - 400 with a 1.4 extender, albeit with the central focussing point only.

Make sure you try a good copy of the 50-500mm os and i think you might come away with it.

I just need to find somewhere in the bristol area that has 1 to try!!

And the same doesn't apply to the sigma? I wasn't saying to be wary of buying a 100-400, just that you're not risking anything more buying a sigma :).

Wow I just rang London camera exchange in Bristol and they have a sigma 50-500 os version and there price is £850!!!
Haven't got the money to buy one but at this price I might just have to try and find it!!
Now what do people mean when they say make sure it's a good version how will I no what's the best way to test it!
I'm going to try it tomorrow!!

I've got a 100-400 L and a sigma 150-500 OS and to be honest the canon has better IQ but the sigma isn't too far behind. I think the sigma beats the canon on stability but again, not by much. I'll know better when I get a good day out at an airshow to compare them. The 150-500 will go on my 5D2 and the 100-400 will go on my 7D to start with, but they may get swapped about a bit, just for an even test on IQ on both bodies.

I have the 100-400mm L and the 50-500mm OS and personally I think the Sigma wins it by a whisker. Given the Sigma also has the extra 50mm and the low end and 60/70mm at the long end (it's not 500mm) then I know which one I would take.

I will be doing a few more tests when we get a bit more sunshine and then one of them will be going in the classifieds.

Well that was a wast of time made the trip to Bristol london camera exchange and it turns out they don't have a 50-500! Also went to Bristol camera's and Jacobs none of them had 1!!
Might have to buy blind when I finally get 1 as nobody seems to stock it!

Mine came from LCE in Colchester via mail order. They ordered it direct from Sigma and it came within 2 days.

Very good service, they took my non OS version in P/X and gave me the same as I would have got had I sold it privately.

I recently bought a s\h 100-400 and as of yet to come to grips with it. Is it me or the lens?

Ah don't butcher it with a TC- just get the Tamron 600 if you need the reach.

Mpb have a very good condition one for £759, listed as mint-. They're very reputable. I've bought a couple of things from them and would be happy to again.

I guess I can forgive you not getting the Tamron in 2012.
