i've got a 100-400L and have just bought a 400 prime. I've also got a 1.4x TC and i'm wondering whether to sell the 100-400 and replace it with a 2.8 70-200 (non IS) and use it with the 1.4 x TC

I use the gear for motorsports and pretty much nothing else. The good thing about the 100-400 is i like the push pull zoom (OK, so i'm the only one) and its good for getting crashes as you can quickly zoom in or out as the action is happening. Only thing is that often i dont find the focusing fast enough and its not as sharp as i'd like it to be. (but that could just be the person operating it :) )

Camera is 1dMk2N

your thoughts please :)

I would it's a far better lens than yhe 100-400.
70-200 F2.8 is L is sharp as hell.

but with the 1.4x on it? would it slow down the focusing a ruin the sharpness?

No still faster and sharper upto 280mm thenn the 100-400

if i put the tc on the 70-200 will i be able to select AF points?

Yes.

If you have got a 400mm prime then id get the 70-200mm. I have the IS version along with 300, and 400mm primes, for motorsport. The 100-400 is good but wont match that combo, in particurlar in lowish light.

At the gym now so can post an example this taken with mine with the 1.4tc fitted

And without

The biggest area of improvement with then 2.8 is when the light fades slightly, as the view finder was brighter, and it was much faster.

Ideally tho try saving and get the 300mm f4 to as that ubsolutely kills it, since purchasing that my 70-200mm has rarely come out the bad.

Just hope now you get a good'n, or you havent got a very very good example of a 100-400mm lol, but tbh honest the extra 30mm is rather handy
