Just a quicky, can the 100-400 IS be used for portrait work, how does it perform under these situations............

I suppose it could be used for portraits, but the aperture range of f/4.5 - f/5.6 isn't going to be ideal for getting decent background blur if you need it, and you'll need plenty of light and a lot of room to get back from the subject.

I don't own one, so I'm theorising.
 
I use mine for birds / wildlife etc etc rather than portraits.

I've used it for a few family shots outdoors though and if the light is good you should get decent results.

Indoors It's obviously not the fastest lens compared to say the 70-200 f2.8 That said this one was just snapped hand held in my living room.

Exposure: 0.017 sec (1/60)
Aperture: f/4.5
Focal Length: 100 mm
ISO Speed: 400

You can use it for Portrait use, but the 70-200 F2.8 IS is a far better lens for this work. I have both.
