Hi all.

I've seen loads of stuff done using 10 Stop ND filters recently. Am I right in thinking that what it boils down to is basically a really, really dark ND filter to allow for mega-long exposures? I love messing with long exposures so my question is; Does anyone do it and is it worth the £70-100 asking price for a half decent 10 stop filter?

Cheers.

yes and yes.

although you'll need to splash out for a decent tripod as well

Cheers Hugh, never even considered needing a sturdier tripod....don't think my 30 quid Argos special will cut the mustard!

Danny, is there any way you can add weight to your tripod before you go splashing out more cash? Is there a hook or eyelet under the head to hang, say your camera bag from just to weigh it down? Just a suggestion

Thanks for the tip Matthew. I'm going to look into that recommendation. Dying to give it a go as the result, especially with seascapes, can look awesome!

I love my 10 stopper. Seascapes tend to be how mine get used.

If your lucky you might be able to get a reasonably priced Lee one. Speedgraphic do them for £99 delivered. Don't know if you have holders that will fit already.

Aaaah I always wondered what that hook was for!!! What a dummy! Haha.

Cheers, just saved me splashing even more cash! :-)

That'd be ideal as 100 notes was really my ceiling price.

I've got the Cokin P holder - I'm assuming that should do the job. Normally don't use it as I tend to hand hold the filters but I very much doubt I've got a steady enough hand for the exposures I'd be going for with a 10 Stopper! :-)

I don't know how compatible your holder will be, you'll have to dig around and see if others use that set up satisfactorily.

I'd say the 2 things to consider are, physical dimensions, the Lee Big Stopper is 100mm x 100mm. The other thing is light leak, how snug is the fit between the foam on the filter against the filter holder. All extraneous light needs to be blocked.

IIRC the Lee Big Stopper wont fit into a Cokin P holder as it is 100 mm square and the Cokin P holder takes 85mm filters. You would need a Lee holder.

Do you NEED a lee holder or would a Cokin Z suffice ? Am thinking of upgrading my Hitech's...

Get yourself a remote cable release too for use with your bulb setting as shutter speeds can get long.

I cant say from first hand experience, sorry. I know Hitech makes two different 100mm 10 stop filters, one for the Lee and one for the Hitech holders, so my guess is that the different holders are different.

Definitely worth the investment IMO i use them all the time for coastal shot,s . Don,t be tempted to go for Hitech they have a strong magenta colour cast , you can,t go wrong with Lee .

They seem very expensive for just a bit of plastic, I just brought a kit of 6 from flea bay although I havent tried them yet

You could always try some welding glass, that way you haven't blown a wad of cash on something you may not use very often.
