10 photographers you should ignore.

It's a good article, just another way of revealing some major influences to a target audience. If you take it too literally, then the article wasn't for you... As mentioned above, that's the beauty of free press.

I personally like the writing style, and I've been avoiding Alec Soth, one of my favourite personal influences, for years now...

He's not mentioned Vivian Maier. I mean, 100,000 negatives, images not developed, thousands more stored in boxes. Fancy just taking all those images and keeping them to yourself, or not even bothering looking at them... ;)

Agreed, an amazing story. Did someone mention a documentary or online video about this?

Martin Parr should've been on there. He's probably responsible for destroying the careers of countless UK photography students than any other factor.

There's only one job role for a Martin Parr photographer and Martin Parr already fills it.

For me, Parr get's life out of subjects that appear to be nothing at first glance. I also like Egglestone and Shore in this style.

Great article. Essentially it says that these great photographers influenced photographic styles to such an extent where their influence became overwhelming. In order to be original you have to step away from their influence.

They could have added a couple of late 20th century fashion photographers to this list such Richard Avedon or David Bailey as their more modern portraiture is copied endlessly.

Really glad you posted that link. Time to look into Stephen Shore.

Ignore them 'cos they are too good and too anal seems to be the point. Not sure I agree.

The point isn't 'ignore them', the title is ironic - the flaw being that irony doesn't work on the interweb because people think everything they read on it is gospel.

...the whole article appears to be a rant about MFA students doing derivative but inferior work and getting obsessed by whichever "art" photographer is fashionable this week... Titanic sinks, many lost!
