Yes
As title really, if you had around £1000 and a free week at the start of February next year, and you specifically wanted to use the time/money to take photos, what would you do?

I'm in that exact position, armed and ready with my Sony RX1 (so a safari is out!) By way of a bit of background, I've done New York 8 times, San Fran, Vegas and LA twice, Boston, Toronto, Venice, and Paris, so would rather do something different. I'm the least sociable person going, so group tours etc are out, I want to be somewhere alone doing things at my pace.

Hong Kong is top of the list at the moment, but struggling beyond that. Temperature and length of flight aren't really of concern.

I was lucky enough to go to Iceland this March, and woudl thoroughly recommend it, BUT, you mentioned wanting to go off alone - Iceland weather can be very unpredictable, and while we were there there were severe blizzards - we had gone on an organised trip, and were very glad it was a very experienced local driver who was at the wheel of the adapted tour vehicle, as driving conditions were very dangerous, with very low visibility and only the roadside markers enabling him to know where the road was.
I would be very cautious of exploring on my own in February.

North west Scotland and the Outer Hebrides. Very atmospheric in February. Plus you could afford a nice warm coat and stay in budget.

Sydney, also taking advantage of the rail network extending up into the gorgeous Blue Mountains. Plenty of landscapes and city life, with a thriving culinary scene to boot. (Hopefully the Lord Nelson's still going strong, even if they did insist on serving all beer at LOX temperature, as apparently required by Australian federal law)

Iceland is a good shout thanks, happy to go over on my own and pick up a tour for a day or two whilst there. Anyone got tips for companies/tours to go with over there?

Hawaii for the slow lava flows and constantly active Kilauea volcano. Either that or Iceland. Both on my bucket list and heading out to Hawaii next year for two months

Hawaii and Sydney both seem a little extreme for £1000 / one week! We were actually booked to go to Hawaii for our honeymoon two years ago including island hopping / volcano tours etc, unfortunately I fell very ill shortly before so had to cancel. Me and the wife are planning to go in a few years, doubt she would be happy if I went alone!

Florence is amazing if you like history, art and architecture.

For landscape of a very varied nature, I really enjoy Cyprus. February would be a good time to go, not too hot and lots of colour with spring starting.

A the risk of echoing everybody else, Iceland would be top of my list, as it has been for the last 15 years. Or somewhere around Scandinavia.

Nightmare for a week, takes about 30 hours to get there and another 30 to get back. Plus you'd only have about 250 quid left to spend after flights if you were lucky.

Greenland! Amazing place although it's a bit of a pain to get to and £1000 might not really go that far. I'd suggest Tokyo/Japan but again a budget of £1000 might not quite make it possible. As has been suggested maybe also look at northern Norway, places like the Lofoten islands are pretty awesome.

If you just want to relax then Madeira's worth looking into as well. :)

I did have this opportunity & I'm hoping to poland on the 11th feb

Add a bit to it and go to New Zealand or Australia and hire a motorhome

As others have said already, for me it would be iceland/Norway/Sweden for the aurora

As per Tobers and Posiview my vote would be Scottish Highlands/Western Isles. Having spent 2 weeks on Skye this year I can vouch for it being gob smackingly beautiful with a huge variety of things to see and photograph. The only downside will be you will not want to leave and, if you are anything like me, you will spend the following months wishing you were back there!

The only other place I would seriously consider would be Iceland but, from what I understand, £1k may well not be enough. :(

Lets us know what you decide :)

Cuba would be great, but a week probably isn't long enough unless you only do Havana.
Morocco?
Egypt (should be cheap at the moment...)?
Vienna is picturesque. A week might be a bit long, but you could do two cities - Bruges, Rome, Madrid, Barcelona, Cologne... so many places...

Or... If you don't live in London, kip on a mate's sofa and spend the money on food, booze and our absurdly expensive underground.

spend the money on a new lens* and just stay in bed for a week

(*this assumes that beer and women of negotiable virtue arent an option)

Luosto in Finland! I'm off next month and about that money including husky and northern lights trips!

Venice, but then I just love Italian doors and windows and a little shopping alongside. I've been there 5 times now 2 of which have been in the winter and just can't get enough.

If it could be possible I'd love to go to the Kazakhstan countryside. Been to Kazakhstan three times and did get a trip through the wilds but there wasn't the opportunity to take pictures so I'd love a chance to go back and shoot.

Cuba. But £1k might be a bit tight

How about Istanbul if you have never been.
Not far and should be well in your budget too.

Holy thread revival,
take it the last 3 posters haven't looked at the date of this thread?
infact wonder where OP went?

Haha nope! I blame the poster above me ;)

It might prompt the op to let us know what they ended up doing though.

I live in Orkney in the north north north of Scotland and to all the people that want to visit me i say. I say a big YES when you want it's great but not in january/february it's just depressing, long night, freezing cold rain and wind. Some days you get a nice low rising sun but some week you won't see the sun and it's night at 4pm. I say all my friends and familly come from the end of april before it's risky. Not that norway would be any warmer and brighter but there you actually get some proper snow experience and big chance for northern light.

Edit: argh we were all replied at the same time... damn old thread bumped up. Anyhow the advice is still good from year to year anyway...

This is so funny. We don't check the date of the original post.

Looks like the bumper is a refugee from the classified automation though it's not a bad hypothetical thread even if the op has long since had his holiday.
