OK, so the fun camera for the next few months will be the 1/4 plate, but it has no screen (I can sort that), no dark slide, no film back thing ... not a great deal really! Thing is, can I use a 6x9 film back on it somehow and do they come with dark slide things?

... and is this what I think it is ... dark slide, screen and film back all in one?

its a film back for a bronica 6x4.5 220 roll film. Pretty much just a sealed - light tight box (when the darkslide is in) and film transport mechanism.

This is more of the 1/4 plate version...

The ETRS is 645, not 6x9.

And nobody makes 220 film any more.

Or am I missing something?

I thought 220 and 120 were the same but 220 was longer and thinner? As I will be effectively making my own back I can accommodate the difference.

Nooooo - I wanna roll film it, not plate it!

220 was the same film as 120 but twice as long, and to make room on the spool, there's no paper backing where the film is... so to use 220 film in a camera it needs to have a light-tight back and a calibrated wind-on (as the paper isn't there to see when you've wound enough through)

You can use cut sheet film in them, not just glass plates

Aaahhh - i think it get it - use the film back as roll film transport, cut a support plate that fits the camera back and mount the film back to it :bonk:

 Hence the need for a dark slide...

I've seen 120 backs for 5x4 plate cameras, I'm sure...

Like the one in this auction... part of bundle with the camera, in this case though :(

Well yes, I expect a lot of modifying - that's part of the fun - but why would I want to remove the dark slide when it's not mounted?

well you won't, but I would have thought the Mamiya its supposed to mount to will have the necessary lugs that release the dark slide.
just putting your 1/4 plate and the back together won't release the darkslide, its 19th century tech meets 20th century tech with idiot locks and safety devices..:D

a hundred quid though...:(

I gots to go do Friday big shop now...:shake:

Yeah - but has been done-can be done :D I do have this huge cnc machine shop I spend some time in :D

Would a non-standard back fall in the right position for correct focus? Could you mount a matched (say graflok) screen and back?

If you went that way, Wista and Horseman/Arca seem to have a good/ the best? reputation for graflok roll film backs but do check which version you're looking at as they do both MF (2x3) and LF (5x4) versions in both 120 and now to be avoided 220.

These come with a crank wind and a dark slide that just slips in and out. Have various 5x4 versions of both and they seem good quality.

Well, as it's a plate camera (double extension) I can put the focal point anywhere I want to really... price is a major consideration here - I have thought about getting a cheap folding camera and using the film transport body from it :D

Sure, but the screen and the back (film) must be matched/ the same distance from the lens.

No screen on it, I've not decided yet where it will go - a choice I will make when I get a film transport sorted.

Picking up on your idea, could you use a couple of 'dead' folders, one cut and shimmed for a screen and the other as a film back?

I do have the screen slide, just no screen in it. Idea would have been to manufacture the same slideway to fit the folder body. Still an option unless I can get a cheap enough Mamiya Universal film back - at which point I will make the camera a Mamiya fit and then will be able to use all the Mamiya bits.

Sounds like a fun project -- it'll be interesting to hear how you get on.

Nice one Cyrillic! There were roll film backs for 5 x 4, made the lenses longer of course.

and I thought I had dabbled with the dark side today after borrowing one of many of Ambermile's "fill-em" thingys......:lol:

Fortunately I have one that uses electricity, so I kind of feel half comfortable with it.....

Whatever happened to the original russian monster Arthur?

I spent many a happy hour watching the transformations of that camera. :)
