Yes
My mate is buying a 70-200mm L lens and we're looking around and we've noticed that you can get the f/4.0 IS for just under a grand, and the non-IS version for as low as £370.

How is that possible? The aperture is the same and they're both USM.

Is IS really worth £600?

i dont think so but it depends what you need it for. I when for the non IS as i want it for sport and dont need it and when i get a 300 im also going to non IS...

keep you hands steady :p

It's always been this way though and the more technical the lens the harder/more expensive it is to put IS in there.

Sorry, I must have touched enter without realising!

From your post I take it you think it is not worth it?

Using WE as an example, this is the difference in price quoted by one company. They obviously sell both items at that price so some folks must recon it is worth it.

I have the 2.8 IS and never considered the non IS at the time so couldn't comment on the relative price difference but it was a lot less expensive at that time!

Sometimes IS lets you get a shot you otherwise couldn't. I mean, the tech does work, no arguing about it.

The 70-200 f/4L IS is also a newer design lens. Is it a feature worth £400/£600? Only you can decide. There is a real rule of diminishing returns when it comes to lenses in higher price brackets.

Rather than looking at the 70-200 4.0, it would be better to go for the 70-200 2.8 non-IS. However, the 4.0 is an excellent lens IS or not. Depends what you're shooting really - if it's fast moving stuff then IS wont do anything for you so save your money.

As others have said.....it's not simply IS for the extra outlay.

The IS version has different optics (1999 design versus 2006 design), weather sealing and IS.....all for £361 if using camerapricebuster's best prices.

An absolute bargain if you need IS.

Bob

I'd found the non-IS for £360 and the cheapest I can find the IS lens is for £900 (or so).

It all comes down to the budget, if your mate can needs and can afford the IS lens then that's the one to go for. On the other hand if his budget is under £400........

Kinell, is it just me or have those prices shot up?

I'm sure when I was looking at prices on the f/4 L IS it was around the £650 ish mark...

Where are you geting these prices from?

Have you been hibernating for the last month? ;) There have been loads of threads here on TP about price rises - which have mainly been caused by the big deterioration in the pound/yen exchange rate.

CPB says the lowest mainstream prices for the IS and non-IS versions of this lens are currently £850 and £489 respectively, which is a difference of £361. And for that money you get a whole load of improvements, as Canon Bob says, as well as IS. But only you know whether it's worth it to you.

I'd disagree. There's lots of guff talked about f/2.8 lenses being the business but they don't suit everyone. They are heavier and sometimes IS is more useful than an extra stop of light.

Well, if you want to buy from a store which:
(a) appears never to have heard of the Distance Selling Regulations;
(b) has a correspondence address which is a council flat on the 9th floor of a tower block in Belfast;
(c) appears not to be registered for VAT;
(d) probably ships its goods from a warehouse in Hong Kong;
(e) accepts no liability for additional taxes (eg import duty, VAT) which you may incur;
then of course that's your right.

Canon EF 70-200mm f4L USM £489.00
Canon EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM £850.00
Canon EF 70-200mm f2.8L USM £939.99

If you were going to get the IS one I would save a tiny bit longer and get the 2.8 non-is, i think the 2.8 would benefit you in more situations than the f4 IS

I must agree with ppp. The price difference between the F4 and the F2.8 IS versions is not great. I would be tempted to spend the extra on the 2.8. However it is heavier than it's smaller cousin and this may be a consideration.
If you can get to Focus, anoy the nice Canon rep and have a play with both versions. Then have a look round and see if you can pick up a bargain. Check out a couple of good dealer prices before you go, just to make sure that the bargain is really that.

Also bear in mind that the Pound dropped by about 1/3 against the Yen between October last year and January this. So prices really had to go up

I have actually been hibernating fella, barely been on here lately, been busy with a couple of other things.

Price increase is mental. :thumbsdown:

For me, the attraction of the f4 is the weight, it is around half the weight of the f2.8.

the IS on the f4 is the latest version, and as has been pointed out the lens itself is built to a higher standard than the non IS version.

Already have the 100-400, so interested in the 70-200 f4 for times when lugging the 100-400 about is less of an option. Personally I'd like a decent 2nd hand f4 with IS and preferably a bit of warranty left.
