A poster on Nikon Cafe has one of these. I think the price is a bit hopeful though one was on eBay a few years back for about £25k.

At first I thought, thats a funky long shape, then I released the small thing at the end was a camera!
 
There is a cracking picture of this lens. It's in this weeks AP magazine.

As others have mentioned, when I first saw it, it took me a second glance before I realised that the item attached to the lens was in fact a camera!

I suppose that this lens is the photographic equivalent of a Delorean or Lamborghini!

Hum, take one curved mirror, i.e. those for letting cars see around corners, and could you get something close by shooting into it?
 
I was going to buy it until I realised it didn't have VR. Shame that. ;-)

Or you could use the old trick of using a car hubcap. IIRC, this was to give you a whole sky view to show the cloud coverage and similar. 220° seems a bit excessive when an 8mm fiasheye will give 180° for an awful lot less money. And yes, you do need to check that your shoes are respectable and that your flies are up.
 
Hubcaps aren't what they used to be so you can't nick one from any old car these days...

Sure, for most people 8mm is plenty short enough. 180 degree would require you to be on the ground to capture the entire sky. If there was a raised area (eg building) then that would obscure the view. With 220 degrees you could go up a fair sized hill, maybe even a mountain, and still capture the entire horizon. That extra 20 degrees each way is a lot when you look at a protractor.

I was wondering about that.

So if people wouldn't pay £100,000 to own it, how much would you pay to hire it?
 
A place in the USA was renting it for $400 a day about 5 years ago supposedly. I read stories about it bing sold to weather stations to take pictures of the sky and one that was dropped on its front at a trade show. Grays prices do seem like Leica prices right now, pick a number, double it, and hope you snag a sucker or a collector. A real feat of engineering though.
