Nikon Z* mirrorless

Just a positive heads up for Cotswold Cameras.

Z6iii & 180-600mm ordered late last Wednesday evening (28th), I could have collected today, but being delivered tomorrow.

Reckon that's pretty impressive service.
Will likely be purchasing, a Nikon Z8 and they have an excellent price, at the moment. Definitely tempted.

I’ve listed a high quality CF Express B card in the classifieds for all you Z6 III and Z8 guys.

Memory prices are going ballistic still.

Trust me to buy a ZR……36 mins of R3D footage on a 1TB card lol

Good evening, I have, today, taken delivery of a Z6ii. The two main control dials are set to:

Front does shutter speed
Rear does aperture

Is it possible to change these around so the front does the aperture and the rear does the shutter speed?

Thank you

On my Z6iii:

Custom settings menu. (Pencil)
f - controls
f2 custom controls (shooting)
Select the control wheel icon
Select Exposure setting - brings up the window to change the dial settings.

Hope it helps.

Yes

Quick question for those that use the z8 and 180-600 with a cotton carrier , do you put the clip on the camera or tripod foot ??
I dont have the 180-600 but the 100-400 instead, but I have the clip on the camera as then when you change lenses then the camera is fixed. There is a nice little tether as well that means even if you take it out the Cotton Carrier dock the camera is still tethered to you via the Cotton Carrier base. See attached photo (Z8 with 24-120 f40 and Cotton Carrier).
My 100-400 has an Arca plate for attachment to the tripod head.

Cheers JK already wrote it up in the thread re the G3 , I initially tried it on the lens tripod foot but it would have stopped me using the arca plate if needed , so now mounted on camera .

marsh harrier hunting in the fog .. shouldn't really have bothered today as the visibility was hopeless but managed this .. think iv'e only had 1 decent day since buying it but gotta keep going

Superb shot. I wish I had the patience and skills to get shots like this.

My landscapes just need great light and that has been missing since end of October last year!

another marsh harrier shot from yesterday , this time tried not to over lighten it to show what the conditions were

Playing around with the 24-120, this is as much as i can crop on the Z8. Looking forward to renting the 100-400 next weekend.

just reviewing my lens selection for the Z8 I only shoot wildlife ( mainly birds) with occasional landscapes , rarely people any suggestions for omitted gaps tell me your thoughts

24-70 Z f4
1.4 Z tc

If you wanted to cover all eventualities in native Z mount lenses, then technically you could do that with 3 lenses - the 14-30 F4 (or the 14-24 F2.8 if you are feeling flush), the 24-200 (however you already have the 24-70 F4), and the 180-600. That takes you from 14mm to 900mm (in 20mp APSC mode) all in 3 native lenses with no focal length gaps.

However as wilt said above, with your adapted F mount lenses, you really have all bases covered anyway.

Oops I missed out that I have the 1.4 Z mount TC as well now added to list . Thanks for the replies

Anyone here an early acquirer of the new Viltrox z mount TC? I’ve never been able to justify the Nikon ones at that price point but the viltrox is much more appealing!

Quick silly question , is it worth buying a Z50ii for extra reach or just switch on DX mode on the Z8 when needed , not as yet tried DX mode thus the question. Can easily turn on DX as it’s linked to one of the front buttons

Nikon are currently suing Viltrox, i'd be rather cautious until that is settled as Nikon could brick Viltrox products with a firmware update.

Argh

I really hate Nikon snapbridge. I just never get it to work with my Z8. It's awful.

I've spent an hour this morning trying to get it to connect to my pixel 7 pro via Bluetooth (it did it once) and it point blank refuses to link via WiFi even when it's trying to do a firmware update and switches automatically.

Compared to the OM system app, it's more than useless.

Looking online it would appear in not alone.

Anyone know the prayer I'm supposed to use to get this app to work lol ?

The Z50II isn't as good a birding camera as the Z8 ( I have both) e.g joy stick, no viewfinder blackout, faster AF, faster shutter speeds etc).

The resolution of the cropped Z8 and the Z50II is almost identical, and there is no advantage** in "pre-cropping" the Z8, unless you want smaller files. And, at least for me, the enormous advantage of using the full frame and cropping in post is the much bigger "target area" available to find and keep a bird in the frame.

The Z50II is still a decent birding camera (much better than the Z6 I and II, or Z7 I and II) in a much smaller and lighter package than the Z8. I now use the Z50II with a 28-400 (before that the 50-250) as an "opportunistic wildlife" outfit to carry alongside my landscape or people and places outfits. Other than that, I can't see me ever choosing the Z50II over the Z8 (uncropped) in any other circumstances.

It's still a good (small and lightweight) back up for the Z8, and still useful as a second body if you need quick access to two different lens set ups, and carrying a second Z8 would be too much weight/bulk (not that I have two Z8s).

**I sometimes use the Z8 in crop mode, (I have the video button set to switch between DF and DX) but that is when I'm doing people and places type pictures needing careful compositions. This is with the 26mm f2.8, which gives me a nice pancake lens and the ability to switch between 26mm and 42mm angles of view without physically switching the 26mm f2.8 out for the 40mm f2.

Yeah, I’d be concerned spending a grand on a LAB lens right now, but would take the risk on a £200 TC that would only be occasional use anyway!

Currently looking at a couple of vitrox prime lenses in Z mount , very cheap might take a gamble .will decide later and yes I know about the court case

I've got the 16mm and 135mm 1.8's on a couple of Z9's...keeping fingers crossed and watching firmware updates closely! (y)
Ah well took a chance viltrox 56mm f1.7 FF BNIB for £139 ,not gonna break the bank if it does go tits up

Super shot. Don't remember that view from when I was there 50+ years ago. I think I need a re-visit.
Thanks! It's a little bit tucked away from the A82 and difficult to park for without a bit of a trek this spot. It sounds like a revisit is long overdue! :giggle:
