I know it would be difficult to autofocus on a clear blue sky for example, but that's not the issue here. It's mostly failing to focus on anything, except well defined things in the foreground. At infinity, it struggles to focus on anything, even well defined landscapes.

I have both those lenses. I haven't used the 50mm f/1.4 yet at all. Got some great pics with the 100mm f/2.8 L though. It's fantastic for portraits. So I'd definitely send the 50mm f/1.4 up the road.
