Tripod for use with a gimbal head....

I've got the 4770 which it looks like you can actually still pick up (new) on ebay at the moment for £280. Would highly recommend that - seems to tick all your boxes too.

Tripod for use with a gimbal head....

Using the centre column isn't going to be stable with a big lens regardless of the tripod - get something without. Look at the Benro Combination series - something like this fits your budget and should be rock solid. I've got a very similar Benro (now discontinued) and a Benro Gimbal, which...

Filters Found nr Tantallon Castle, Scotland

I almost left them be in case someone returned to search for them, but I didn't really fancy their chances left where they were... I personally have no use for them so it would be very satisfying to be able to get the back to who they belong to

Filters Found nr Tantallon Castle, Scotland

Found some filters on a beach near Tantallon Castle today. I've picked them up and have them with me as it seemed a shame to leave them there for the elements, but would obviously be nice to be able to reunite them with their owner, so if you think they may be yours, get in touch!

Canon 100mm USM Macro Aperture Problem

Having an issue with my macro lens, seeing as the repair shop isn't open today I thought I'd see if anyone here may have any ideas on what's going on/what it's going to need done to it. The problem I'm having is - if I stop down to, say, f14 and take a series of shots some of them will...

Can anyone recommend a resource on where and when to find various insects?

I really don't like that advice. As much as I'm sure we're all guilty of trying to coax an insect onto a slightly different twig or something, you should always be aiming for minimum disruption. Just because you can pick up insects and take them with you it doesn't mean it should be encouraged...

"You have to break the rules to get the best shot"

Apart from the bit where he climbed onto private property seemingly without permission, the criticism of him doesn't really seem to be based on a lot of fact either to be completely fair. There's no really hard and fast rule - every animal has a different level of tolerance; being close doesn't...

"You have to break the rules to get the best shot"

As I say, every situation is different, you may well be right - I wan't really talking about your situation specifically. There have been a few posts suggesting that, as a general rule, behaviours that animals may be used to (such as people passing by or dogs barking) may be more disturbing than...

"You have to break the rules to get the best shot"

I'm not doing that - I was trying to make the point that, just because you know you're sitting quietly at a respectful distance posing no threat, the owl might not perceive it in the same way. The point I was trying to get across was - animals get used to certain behaviours and therefore you...

"You have to break the rules to get the best shot"

Standing around quietly can be a lot more disturbing than quickly passing by noisily though. Put yourself in the place of the animal - you're sitting in your house one evening, what do you find more disturbing: a group of people who are shouting/playing loud music/letting their dogs bark but...

Beginner How to focus when using dark filters?

Yes it would - set up back button AF, making sure AF is switched off on the shutter button. Focus using back button, add filters, press shutter. Much easier and more useful in the long run than keep switching AF on an off on the lens

Canon 200-400 with 1.4 extender announced

I think there are very vague suggestions that Canon are finally working on a 400mm 5.6 prime that has IS - I swear I saw something about it on CanonRumors a little while back, I'll try and find it... On the subject of the 200-400 - worth noting that, at £12k, it's a few of grand more than...

Canon 200-400 with 1.4 extender announced

The only UK site I've found with it at the moment has it listed for an incredible £12,000 which is a crazy amount more than the US price. It's inevitably going to drop in price a bit after a few months, but it's still going to be a hell of an expensive lens, and unfortunately well out of my...

    7D AF sometimes doesnt work

Check your AF settings (menu, C.Fn III in the custom functions menu). Make sure option 4 (Lens drive when AF impossible) is set to 0:Focus search on. I would've sworn at the weekend that there was something up with the AF on my 7D, turns out I must've changed this setting at sometime...
