I am doing a project over the next couple of weeks hooting models in the studio with green screen and then compositing into screens shot outside.

I suggest that you see if there is a camera club close to you as they may be a great source of information and there may be people there willing to tutor you.
I googled the issue and this is what came up as a comment from the manual.
if using a non-canon flash set the silent shooting mode to "Disabled" otherwise the flash will not fire
