Although I haven't got a shot to demonstrate myself as I'm still in planning/praying for a clear night and somewhere with no light pollution, I have found that the stars move roughly 15 degrees an hour.
So for a full circle (if desired) it would take 6 hours or just work around the times to...
Using the lens hood at night is still fine if you want to block out some of the excess street lighting etc but try not to combine the lens hood and the on camera flash. One or the other really.
If I was you I wouldn't bother with the flash at night it should make for much more interesting...
Didn't the D700 retail at about £1500-£1600 when introduced in 2008? So surely a D800 at £2500 couldn't be a replacement? More of an upgrade like the d3100 to the d3200.
And yeah the price of the D7000 has gone down and so has the D5100 (I work in jessops haha)
There is going to be a D400 to replace the D300 and a D600 to replace the D700. Both cameras expecting to be prices around £1300-1700 roughly but they are yet to be announced unfortunately :( not seen any talk of a D7000 replacement yet.
The d7000 is probably the best option with the sounds of it in terms of body shape and weight etc. I would personally recommend a d5100 with a battery grip for a gig though as the ISO performance is the same as the D7000 (and a hell of a lot better than the D90) but the vari-angle screen proves...
The Tamron 17-50 2.8 Di II with VC is an awesome lens and for less than £400 it's the perfect upgrade to the 'kit' lens if you can afford a 17-55 or a 24-70 2.8 :)
