Probably a dumb question, but what is the main benefit of getting the 20/1.7 over just using the kit lens at around 20mm? I'm not really thinking about portrait photography at all as I'm more into photographing vistas/buildings etc with the odd picture of me and my wife in said places.

I have a 55-250 Is and it is indeed a very nice lens considering what little money it costs.

I've just bitten the bullet and spend 60 on a crumpler messenger boy 400 for my 500D with 55-250 attaches, and hopfully room for spare lens and other bits and bobs. It should arrive tomorrow so I'll post some thoughts on it.
