Beginner Advice for Chess Club photos?

Thanks for the advice re lighting chaps. I'll investigate at the next match. The rooms we play in are normally fairly well light (for a pub!) Also, I can use a tripod and my subjects are fairly (very!) static. Will I really need to 'keep the shutter speed up'? I'm hoping to be able to throw...

The 35mm lens is probably my best quality lens but I'm thinking not to get in people's faces too much. I want to be almost invisible! :)

Hmmm - I just looked at my profile and my DSLR equipment doesn't seem to be showing.

Yes, I updated my Profile to show my DSLR equipment earlier today. I now have a Nikon D3100 with 3 lenses ; the kit 18-55mm, an f1,8 35mm and a telephoto 55-200mm. None have VR.

I don't think my camera has a Custom White Balance. Under the WB tab, I have :- AUTO, Incandescent, Cool-White Fl, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy, Shade and PREset Manual. I can't find if PREset manual has any parameters anywhere.

Beginner Advice for Chess Club photos?

I'm thinking of taking some photographs at my local chess club during matches. They would be of two types :- 1. A single photo of the whole match in progress to add to a website match report. This would be 5 boards, 2 players each. 2. Some individual candid portraits of our team members playing...

    New laptop battery required....

Sorry, I didn't mean that. I was following up on the general advice to back up data. Then the only thing you could lose under any circumstances might be pre-installed stuff. I didn't mean to suggest that changing the battery might cause any loss.

If the data is backed up, the only thing you might lose is any pre-installed software (doubtful in your case.) What Laptop is it? I have some spare from my dead laptop which failed on me last month (a HP Pavillion)

Can we assume that you do not back up your data? Sooner or later all mass storage devices fail. The 11th commandment - Thou shalt backup till thou art blue in the face with backuping.

Lake District WEEKEND Meet - RESPONSES NEEDED

Having read the whole 5 pages in one go, I kind of lost my way a bit. Could someone clarify... Is this a film-only (i.e. no digital cams) meet? Is it fully booked? What is the actual full cost?

    Beginner D3300 or D3200

I'd agree that with the 15% discount, the D3200 looks very good value but its £238, not £218 because there is no cashback on the D3200, only on the D3300

    Facebook Banner WINNER!!

Well done @Morbid ! Especially so with the quality and quantity of all the other entries. I managed to 'pick the winner' with one of my three votes though I could have used 30 votes if I had them! A worthy winner! Steve
