I fear your "reasonably inexpensive" idea may not work out.
I have been reading recently that wireless USB hubs are slowing making their way to the shops. It's still very new tech at the moment, best to wait a bit imo.

Still life is hard to crack.
The best advice i could give you is to look at paintings.
The master painters are the ones who changed pictures of "stuff" in to an art form.
Study them & you will be snapping great still life in no time. :)
