Challenge New TP Wildlife (inc. Birds & Macro) Competition

Is gen fill/replacement acceptable? e.g, removing of a fence, and replacing with a like background that's in the rest of the photo?

    Deer rut in Richmond

If you could drive, I'd recommend that. Could always get a taxi from the station, but yeah, definitely a slog.

    Roses help

Flower Balling: This physiological condition is a primary suspect. It occurs when cool, wet weather saturates the outer petals of the developing bud. If this is followed by a period of sunshine and drying, the petals can fuse, forming a tight, papery casing that prevents the bud from opening...

    Ant ID

Yeah, that'd be conclusive with the C. lateralis. Love ants - Fascinating creatures.

The most amazing and reliable focus speed

Find it's a combination of lens, to camera body. Example; RF 400mm f2.8 - Extremely quick on the R5. R6, it's decent, but a touch slower. R7, I can notice the difference. RF 100-500. 0 difference between any of the bodies I found.

    Ant ID

Sorry to ressurect this thread - but I love ants. Crazy hard to try and figure out the exact species, as the sheer number is crazy. I presume you were saying Mediterranean region? I don't think it's a banded sugar ant. The gaster suggests otherwise based on the picture. I think going based...

    Deer rut in Richmond

I think there were a few days in October that presented like this. This was Oct 18th. Was stunning, especially when you then had the golden light burning it's way through the mist. Was some crazy cool days!

    Deer rut in Richmond

Like all wild animals, it's dependent. It's a massive area, and it depends on how busy (with people) it is, and where they have their territories. As much as I hate to say it, you'll normally see monstrous crowds following the deer around far too close, so can easily tell where deer are based...

    Deer rut in Richmond

Early is better. I think on average I'd get there for around 5.30/6am, and then spend the next few hours there. This day happened to be extremely misty and was at approx 8.30am. (18th October) Iso 160 still at 1/1000. Note this is massively downscaled. Seems some horrible restrictions on what...

    Insect decline in the UK

Perhaps the milder winter has helped. Plus, no non stop rain like last year.

    Deer rut in Richmond

Weather dependent honestly. Last year they started really late, and then because of how mild it went midway, it really changed the behaviour. Likely have to play it by ear. Car works. Depends if you're going early or late. Time depends on weather and whether you want first or last light. I'm a...

Anyone else seeing alot of barn owls

I'm pretty sure last year was a mast year. Oak trees produced a ton more acorns than normal. In turn lots more mice and voles. I happened upon a lot of breeding pairs of barn owls. Captured some great shots.

Red-billed chough, Merlin Bird App Cumbria?

Wales is also good for them. Captured a bunch there when I hit skomer Island last year.

    Insect decline in the UK

As both a macro photographer, and motorcyclist, there is a tremendous reduction in number of insects. Helmet used to be covered. Barely any these days which is a major shame. I turned my entire front lawn into a wildflower meadow, so hoping to see what is produced from that this year.
