I have both and the iso on the D300 is not a patch on the D700, also you could always put a x1.4TC to get the reach back

I have just got a Sigma 500f4.5 prime and also a Kenko pro300 DG 1.4x TC to use with it. When together on a D300 AF is very erratic almost non excistant, I thought the Kenkos were suppose to AF ok or do i have to tape pins like on the Sigma TC

I use the Lowepro Voyager with a card holder and of course a TP one

i have just got one but havent used it yet, the dgx means designed for digital

you can only but try, as i said cant remember the exact location of the camera or if it might have been a mobile one if further out, but generally in this area a lot of limits have been reduced recently. Usually its only when you are pulled over you can dispute the calibration on the mobile ones.
