One of me taken on sunday by my aunt with my camera, she was so shocked i was holding a child (a 2nd cousin) she thought she'd take one :D
I love how sharp my nifty is and the really shallow DOF is nice in some instances as is the speed.
I do find it a little long on my 400d in some cases, as i found out trying to get some family shots in a small garden on sunday. I had to resort to using my kit lens (the more crappy 18-55 ;))...
I'm fairly local to you. I don't think i'm good enough and you seem to be a little over-run with both cars and togs as it is. Maybe next time George :)

Sorry, one last question. Are the refurb units offered by various companies (including ebay) worth entertaining? Or merely false economy?
