When i first started I ended up with a Sigma 170-500 on a Canon body. Lens even then was OK - a little grinding on the zoom ring but a good starting point. Back then you had to be wary of chipping issues between body and lenses but reckon today that should be resolved. Best ask Sigma themselves...

Find that a bit of a bizarre series to start with and for the organisers to allow entry to. Would have thought something slower would suit first timers better especially with these cars record of smacking into the barriers!!
Think that it really does depend upon the event.
Like at F1 this pinch point would be the limit of public access whereas this weekend yes you could both walk and bus through this point onto the Wing.
It's also the first time that I've seen the catch fencing screened off and marshalls/stewards...
Been in covered stands over previous years and sometimes they're absolutely freezing inside. When I went (not anymore mainly because of cost) I never worried about it being covered.
Pick you seat numbers carefully and if it ends up raining you can use a brollie that others in forward rows can't...
