Some good advice above which I can't really add much to, but I think it's difficult to go for a 'look' if you are photographing different subjects all the time. You also have to careful because a 'look' can make all your pics look a bit samey.

I use AV most of the time as I'm normally taking all sorts of different shots, adjusting aperture on the front dial and exposure comp on the rear dial as I've been taking pics for a long time and can make an instant judgement as to whether I need comp or not. I'll use manual if I'm using flash...

You might have just been unlucky on the batteries you've just put in. I did a quick search on google for kx using batteries too quickly and there were a lot of hits to do with types, how well charged etc, so do the same search, have a read and see if any of it helps...
