85mm for me; but you can rest assured you've got all the bases covered. Primes are preferable but as above, just wait and see when you get there what suits your style the most.

Disagree. As a percentage of the total volume I find them to be very effective. For me it's a wonder anything posted in one end of the country can arrive at a private household only 12-18 hours later. Remarkable. There's always going to be some losses though unfortunately.
The problem, IMO, with running the first audio over the second clip is that the sound would be getting quieter despite the car accelerating towards. Also, the Doppler effect would be reversed and the pitch variation would be back to front.

I'd heartily recommend the 50mm f/1.8 Mk II that's been suggested above. From the 18-55mm, it really lets you try things that you just can't with the kit lens.
