    28-300 3.5 -5.6 as a wedding lens

Just read through this thread, and I'm surprised that so many people want to jump into giving opinions without reading the OP's postings properly. As you're using a Nikon D700, the aperture range of the Nikon 28-300 can be offset somewhat by shooting at higher ISOs -1600/3200 are perfectly...

    Difference between these Nikon lenses?

Completely agree. I can't speak for the VRII version, but to describe version I as flimsy is astonishing. I use mine on a D3, and as I shoot mainly people, the vignetting diesn't worry me at all.

motorsport photography, D3 or 1D mkIII??

I can't comment on the capabilities of Canons for motorsport. However, you also mention indoor presentations. Here, the D3 will offer you a whole new dimension of indoor shooting without flash. I shoot events and performances for a couple of schools, and shooting in classrooms and halls without...

    Medium zoom for D700

See if you can find a used Nikon 35-70 F2.8. Great lens on Nikon FF, also, compared t a 24-70, compact and not too heavy though very well-built.

Knowsley safari park - worth visiting

You might find Knowsley quite difficult. As you say, you will be shooting through car windows (serious wild animals prowling about), which is not ideal. Also if you choose to drive through the monkey section you run the risk of damage to the vehicle - when I was there this included wiper blades...

Yet Another What Bag Thread... But Hopefully Different

I recently bought a Crumpler bag and I'm really disappointed with it. It's like a reverse Tardis - much bigger on the outside than the inside. Huge amounts of padding and it comes nowhere near being able to take the amount of equipment they claim. Complete waste of money.

    Best Photographic Equipment Insurance?

I was insured with Glover and Howe. I dropped my D2X with 70-200 attached. Repair cost around £450 and G&H paid up without a problem.

    DSLR Lifespan

The thing is, digital cameras have become computers with lenses attached. Buying a new DSLR generally represents a genuine upgrade in capability. Whether a particular person needs a particular upgrade for their purposes is another matter. But it's not like film cameras, where one 35mm body...

advice: my d40 pics have marks on them... with samples

If the dust won't blow off and you live within range of a Calumet store, they do same day sensor cleaning (at least, they do in Manchester) every Friday. Costs about £35. I find the costs of the cleaning kits quite high and I'm notoriously cack-handed, so I think it's well worth having it...

    Hard Drive.....

I'd rather trust a hard drive (actually 2 or more hard drives) than DVDs. I have a mixture of internal and external hard drives. I keep all my pictures on 1 of the internal hard drives and back up to 1 or more external drives. The only pictures I have lost in the last 4 years have been some...

    So...How Did You Learn Photography?

I shot film on and off for many years and didn't learn that much because I didn't have the discipline to keep technical notes and assess my shots. When I retired I did the first year of a City and Guilds and it was incredibly helpful in terms of learning the basics. Unfortunately my local...

    Proms

Organisation, organisation organisation. Unles somebody is marshalling the kids for you, many will be reluctant to have their pictures taken. Many of them will want groups of friends. Very few, unless somebody is organising, will want individual shots, which is unfortunate because those...

Places to visit and photograph in the UK

A few more for the North West. Astley Green Colliery Museum http://www.agcm.org.uk/ Still has the old headgear, engine house and quite a lot of related machinery as well as quite a lot of junk. Open (and free) on Sunday, Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Pennington Flash Country Park...
