If you are going to go for a tablet, check out TuneIn Radio. It's free and you can get stations from around the globe as well as UK stuff. It also plays UK stuff when you are abroad so I can listen to Radio 4 when I am travelling :-)

EDIT: Actually, if anyone does know of an actual tool that does this I would still be interested. What the ping approach does not give me it times when the connection went down.

Does anyone know of a good free tool to monitor and possibly log the status of my internet connection? The reason I'm asking is that I just changed my router and everything seems to be working fine but my irc client (mirc) seems to be disconnecting every so often. I've tried keeping an open ping...
The threads were already at the top so not actually bumped in the real sense of the word. I thought it was importnt that the OP's knew the advice was not independant but thanks for reporting him, that was going to be my next step.
