    If you want a top notch photo printer you are probably looking seperate anyway, vs something combined....

    Have a good look though the forum here as many people have been in your position ;-) On that budget you may be better looking second hand - for me a good fast prime (say 50mm either 1.8 or 1.4) would be a good start esp for family ?

    Upgradeing kit lens

    I'd prob go for the Canon myself. You also want to invest in a fast prime (e.g. 50mm 1.4) as I tend to use this more than my 24-105L kit when I bought my 5D.
