The tips I'll be bearing in mind for my Iceland trip will be:
Bring spare batteries and try to keep them warm as cold batteries run out faster.
Use a laser torch to help focus properly.
Gonna start off in Reykjavik to explore for a few nights, before hiring a car to explore the sights all the way to Skaftafell without booking tours.
Hopefully will get some good advice from the hotels on the best locations for seeing the lights.

Can concur that the Canon 55-250mm lens is an excellent 2nd choice lens. There's a mark 2 version of this lens and I don't think that there is any improvement optically.. so I would try and find a mark 1 version for less.
I believe the Canon s100 has similar if not better image quality than the X10 (Apparently)? But the canon is a lot smaller and lighter than the X10, and should seriously be considered.
