    Too dry is bad for lenses, dries out lubricants. 40-60% relative humidity is best. I use a dehumidifier.

    Canon 50mm 1.4 is micro USM not ring USM. Sigma with ring type should be faster, quieter and better for manual focusing. If it's anything like the 30mm, it's every bit as good as a Canon. I agree, I wouldn't expect this to be more the Canon. 50mm is supposed to be a relatively easy focal...

    I wouldn't stand for that. Any repair needs to be carried out with reasonable care and skill (legal requirement), I'd wager that wasn't! If it were me I'd make a fuss, but regarding time anything up to six weeks is deemed acceptable for specialist repairs I think.
