    Sport shooters. f2.8 or f4?

Yep, correct. I meant that with the D3s you get a a better AF system and high-ISO when I said "but you lose that AF accuracy and a stop of high ISO"; my fault for not being clear. Although TBH I think 1.5 stops is a bit hopeful, since your working a 16.7 vs 12 mpixel image. At a 100% crop...

    Sport shooters. f2.8 or f4?

300mm f/2.8 with 1.3x crop offers the same framing and seperation as a 400mm f/4 on full frame. (more or less). So on a 1DIV you could be at 300mm f/2.8, 6400 and get the same shots as the Nikon shooter with a 420mm f/4 at 12800! (or 12800 at 600mm f/5.6 and 6400, 420mm, f/4) Essentially with...

    Shooting opportunities in the midlands....

Mallory, Silverstone, Donnington, Hillclimbs, Santa Pod. Should be in reach. I'd like to see other suggestions too; especially MX venues!

Light area on images shot on 1DS MK3

IF you shoot at 1/60th or there abouts you'll probably notice no real line - untill 1/200th ish. If thats the case - dead/dying shutter. You'll notice it most at high speeds like 1/2000th.

when auto point selection is selected all the outer points light up - all points are active.

    Which wide(r) angle L series?

Hi Andy, If budget is an issue consider the 17-35L and 16-35L mark I for your f/2.8's. 17-35L is sharper than the newer lenses towards the 35mm end of the zoom. The 16-35's are sharper than the 17-35 and the wide end. On the 7D the f/2.8 will be useful - much more of a walkabout range and...

    ef 35-350L

IQ should be good & weight shouldn't be too heavy, but in all honesty on the 1.6x crop a 50-500 OS is probably a better idea. No heavier. No worse optically. Not really much slower. Longer reach. If on full frame though a 35-350 would be cool.

Hiring a lens to take to the zoo

Tough one - I found the walking around & monkey section perfect with a 70-200. But the other bits 300/420mm would be nice. I guess since your on crop you could use a 70-200 the whole way around.

    One 'L' of an addiction

Don't tempt me... EDIT: I see the tokina/sigma lenses vignette mahoosivley so there's no real point, they mount but don't "work". /EDIT Thats a good point. My stuff get's used (worn down to metal in places, a few chips, lot's of scratches, used in rain/snow/sand, lives in a...

    One 'L' of an addiction

Although bceause they are a 1.25x crop they don't actually accept crop lenses. :bonk: (Bit rubbish for wide angles - widest is sigma 12-24 or canon 14 or canon 16-35)

    One 'L' of an addiction

D2Hs used to be popular too (1.5x) Yeah the canon superteles are excelent (300mm f/2.8, 500mm f/4 my experiences but I'm sure the 300mm f/4 & the rest are just as good). They feel awesomelylovelynesswonderfullynicebutreaellyhurrendouslyheavy.
