I normally carry a D70 and 18-70mm and shoot scenery and landscape, occassionally people or street stuff. Often though my skies feel flat and I'd like to work out how to bring out a bit more contrast in the pictures. Will filters make a difference?

Fair enough - I pay all the taxes my accountant tells me to... As for NHS/potholes/MP's expenses - thats politics and I try not to dabble with that...

You don't have to pay tax and duty on anything that is "returned from warranty repair"....

I've been looking around for a D700 and cheapest new that I have seen is: http://www.simplyelectronics.net/mainproduct.php?pid=3868 Their price for a 24-70 is only £1196 so combined is a few hundred over your budget...
