Big wedding group shots in bad light.

If additional lighting was out of the question (and it would have been difficult to set up and balance with all those people), then I would have tried to bracket exposure and combine images in PS. Or there might have been enough dynamic range in the raw file to equalize everything in Lightroom...

    whats a "kicker" light

I thought it was called a kicker because of its placement and that's what you ended up doing to it... I believe it's also known as Rembrandt lighting.

    Anyone used Zenfolio?

Another vote for Zenfolio. It's worth noting that they're US based too, it's just that their UK/European offer is a little more advanced than SmugMug. IMO, SmugMug may look slicker, but Zenfolio is easier to customise outside the standard template. And there are quite a few people jumping ship...

Canon 28mm vs. Canon 35mm vs. Sigma 30mm

Oooh - I'd not seen the new Sigma 35mm! I assumed everyone meant the old DC (EF-S) model. Are there any details for it yet? Mainly price and date - and then a review would be nice ;) As an aside, how does the Sigma 85mm compare with the Canon 1.8 and 1.2?

Canon 28mm vs. Canon 35mm vs. Sigma 30mm

I'm in a similar position as the OP, but this is for a FF 5D. The end goal is the 35mm f1.4, but I'm torn between the 28mm f1.8 with it's USM focusing and the 35mm f2.0 with it's preferable focal length. I know the 28mm got an average review from the-digital-picture, but I think the lack of USM...

    Studio for hire?

Nothing too special - it's for a couple of family shoots, so a reasonable sized white background and lights (umbrellas or softboxes)

    Studio for hire?

I'm wanting to hire a studio locally for a few shoots I'm doing. Other than googling and hoping, is there a better way of finding studios for hire? (I know of a couple of places, but availability is normally an issue...)
