I'm using a black inverted layer mask and the Gaussian Blur Filter to smooth out the skin on the face of a subject in old Black and White photos. It's a subtle effect but looks good.
My problem is that once I've applied this layer mask, I cant sharpen up the image using the high pass filter...

All the eyes in these kids have been damaged somehow but the kid second from right has been particularly difficult to fix:

It's almost as there is a big lump of something stuck to where the nose meets the left and right eyes...
I'm trying to do a sky replacement using the colour range method but once I get the new sky in place and select colour range what I get is this screen that doesn't allow me to do anything:

I'm looking for some character, texture, atmosphere, genre effects type filters that I can use on photos in Ps. I've worked with these types of filters in Ae such as digieffects damage
that has filter applications such as aged film.
Any suggestions on the best place to find such filters?
I start of selecting the area and then going to add adjustment layer > curves. Then when it comes to the next step my "marching ants" selection has gone. What should I be doing (or not doing) to keep the same selection when moving onto the each step?

I tried your directions out and think I understand the process. I managed to lift the stain off the face a bit but didn't get to far with the shirt. Could it be done with two selections - one on the face and another on the shirt?

This stain is on the original print processed in 1969. I've digitized the family's photos because they are an important part of NZ Military History and it's stains like this one that made the job so urgent. I'm now trying to touch them up/restore them etc but my skill set isn't advanced enough...
