Phil, I have lent my D80 back up camera to my son. He would like to use my 18-135 on a semi permanent basis so I was looking for a sharper alternative that matched up to my recently acquired D7000. An £800 lens is way OTT for what I would use for, which is general family shots and landscapes...
Thanks everyone. I am looking to upgrade my 18-135 lens, which until now I have used mostly for landscapes and general work. It has been suggested that a 18-200 would be a good upgrade, but I wanted to be sure it was ok for landscapes as well. The16-85 second hand also looks like a good...
What is considered to be the best mid priced Nikon lens (£200-£300) for landscape photography and why. Are there any 3rd party lenses that are considered to be as good?

I am looking to upgrade the quality of my nikon 18-135 (I have a 300mm F4 prime) can anyone advise if nikon do a better quality lens in a similar range. I use it for general shots, portraits and landscapes.

Rob,
I have the Tamron 90 which I have used on my Nikon D80 and had great fun with it. Mine is the older version which wont communicate to the camera so I can only use it in MF mode. It has a shallow depth of field so you have to be spot on with the focus, but it is razor sharp when u get it...
Thank you all, you have given me much to ponder on. If only they would hurry up with the rumoured holy grail (D400). I am strongly tempted to go for a D300 or D300s until the D400 appears or the D800 drops down to a sensible level.

Thanks guys, I take your points about the use of a crop factor camera. I bought the F4 300 as a reasonably hand holdable quality lens, but I find that I use it more often on a tripod to get better sharpness as the D80 is not brilliant in terms of iso and i often find the shutter speed suffers...
I have a Nikon D80 which I am looking to upgrade in the near future.
Which would be better for bird photography (with a Nikon F4 300 lens), a D700 or a D300. Or do I wait for the rumoured D400?
Len
Thanks Ausemmao, for bird shots I use a single point focus (and metering), so the advantages of the extra number of focus points on the D300 wont give me any benefit.
