The 16-85 is one of my noisier lenses, mines more of a squeaky noise than anything :shrug:

I've got the 488 RC2 ball head on mine. I like it a lot, very stable with everything I can attach to it (d300s, grip, 150-500mm lens, flash) and still locks and stays in any position. I've had the pan and tilt heads and didn't get on with them so well.

Haha yes its certainly very nice. Luckily I get all my food bought for me :D

I have both the same lenses and that doesn't sound right, My 70-300 is as quiet if not more so than the 55-200. I would take it back to where you got it and ask for a exchange.
