Another vote for the Nikkor 18-70mm - Very sharp; good quality lens that is widely available. The next one I would recommend is the Nikkor 16-85mm VR, but that one would break your budget!

I think the A300 does 3 fps max - So for sports I'd probably look more towards the A700 - 5 fps. Or Nikon D90 - 4.5 fps.
