Great post Matt, thank you for sharing. Like you, and so many others, I suffered in silence for years before finding the courage to seek help and try to turn my life around. You're an inspiration to us all.
I cba reading through all this so I may be repeating the sentiments of others. All I would say to the OP is spend more time taking photos and less time on forums. I'd always recommend worrying less about other people's opinions and more about having a defined goal to measure your own success by.
I guess a lot will depend on how much you value the prize.
In answer to the opening question, personally I wouldn't. But then I wouldn't have any interest even without that clause.

I used to always be looking at other lenses, and occasionally bodies, dreaming about how I could be such a great photographer, if only I had the right kit. It's complete nonsense of course. Until you have completely mastered every aspect of the gear you have, and reached a point where you feel...
My advice would be to keep working with, and exploring, the equipment you have until you reach a point where you feel it is holding you back and you HAVE to upgrade. That would usually start wih lenses and perhaps, eventually, the body itself.
Someone bought me a deal with these guys off one of those discount sites. I was pleasantly surprised at the print quality. IIRC they are based in Germany and the turnarond time wasn't too quick but they did a decent job for the price.
