I agree with what both above have said , i have used the very same combnation 40 D & 70-300m IS Lens for rugby in the past. You will reach other side of pitch know problem. I even used a mono-pod in the dark winter months as well , every little helps to prevent shakes.
The 120-300 mm Sigma is a great lens for your rugby photography also the 100-400mm IS Canon is a good lens for sport as well. But the 120-300 Sigmas as the headge being F 2.8
Hi Phil, i follow my team from the touchline & throuhout each half i cover the game from both sides of the pitch 22 meter line to the try line and from behind the tryline. Then in the second half do the same thing again.
You should get better photo`s with 75-300 on your 500D than you have been getting with the point & shoot. You will know the distance of the wicket from the rope so that will give you a idea to start for zoom.Try a monopod rather than trypod.
