Yes ..... but dont store anything else on it till you have recovered .. I use handy recovery ... and have had good results on recovery, well into the 90%+ range and that includes mem cards that have been wrote to again
then there is easeus data recovery which is powerful but not as user friendly
70-200 with the 2 x TC is a better option for the hike unless you balance a backpack well .... only thing is with the 2 x TC you lose 2 stops as well ... so light may be a consideration
I know im going to get slated with this comment ... but i'll make it anyhow
I have the 70-200 f2.8 but i went for the sigma .... pretty comparable to the canon ... cheaper and a lot more descrete ..... The saving may be enough to upgrade to the 7D lol which works well & is well ballanced...

Tried the canon 50mm in the shop the day i bought it and the sigma was considerably sharper and faster on the focus.
The deal had expired ... but 3 minutes .. surely they could have honoured it ....

I would go into a shop and have a look and feel (see if they will let u take test shots (most will so take SD & CF cards another difference between the cameras)) and take it from there ... if cost isnt an issue then for another 400 or so quid pick up the D700 and then you will really be...
I can understand wanting to get a nikon i'm currently struggling between the high iso performance of the D700 to the crop advantage of the D300.... but im definatley leaving olymus to go to the Dark side!!
