I had a D700 for a few months and sold it to upgrade to a D3. I don't regret it. The swinger for me was dual cards, slightly better framerate and 100% viewfinder. I love my D3!
In my experience, the bokeh is better on the 1.4, and the build quality is vastly superior to the very plasticky and noisy 1.8.
The 1.4 is my most used lens by a mile.
I'm kinda in the same camp. My family, friends and relatives tell me I take great photos and I should turn pro, but almost all of them have something wrong with them to my eye.
I have a few I'm pretty happy with, but not many. I guess I'm being a perfectionist.
Conversely I'm considering binning Canon for Nikon because I think the AF is a good bit better on the D700/D3 and the ISO performance seems better me also.
It's the perennial debate really.
