Using unallocated space on the same physical drive as the system partition

Well, you don't have to loose it, you might still be able to create a new partition and format it as d:, some motherboards/boss did use to have a fake disk driver to allow them to use >2TB disks even when them shouldn't have. Think it might have been slow though. You could download a liveCD and...

    back-ups

The problem is, that most things in Linux are command line, or script based. For example, upstart which is what starts your Linux kubuntu, is actually just a bunch of command line scripts. The reality is, that everything in the background is just pretty much a set of command line scripts. If...

    External hard drive

To be sure, hold down the CTRL button as you drag. You should see a + appear on the icons, and this will force a copy

    Full frame DOF

Erm, yeah, think if I float that one past the other half, it might end in divorce. Stand? Lucky if they got below 5mph that morning :)

So minnnt does make a good general point, but and it is entirely my fault, missed my restriction. I am shooting the photo indoors, which is where on my 1.6x crop, the 70mm is too long. For outside, I don't consider myself a He-Man, but the 70-200 f/2.8 does me well (at the mo). (well, apart from...

    back-ups

Getting back to the op's post. Personally I have two servers, and sync the data from one to the other. Then in theory I use a single USB disk for an offline backup once a month (er, when I remember). My servers run standard hard disks, in RAID 5 or 6. Spinning disks are relatively safe, the...

You move the goalposts though with your new requirement to trigger the update when a file changes. BTW. the item given previously about rsync could be used to achieve that (where your GUI can't). I think you are being somewhat blinkered if you think people shun crap guis (think windows), or...

Photographing my own kids - help (not technical) pls

So recently I tried taking some shots of my niece, she is coming to three, and my son was 12 months at the time. My son obviously doesn't understand being told to sit still and smile. The niece, unfortunately when she is told to smile, is nothing like natural. For one of the shots, we put a...

OOf and not quite sure why?

What was the lens? Some suffer from focus creep, in a rush you may not have noticed. At a wedding I was a guest at, I managed to knock the manual focus knob on the lens as I took it out of the bag (I presume). Took several shots (with the camera confirming focus!), which were miles out, before I...

    just lots of bad luck

I guess she doesn't shoot RAW. :0 :):) At my wedding, our 'toga encouraged our gusts to take shots whilst he was arranging, and then give him a couple of seconds peace for his shot. Very polite about it, everyone happy.

Yes, but on a 1.6x crop, the 55mm is getting to be too close for a 3 year old full-length at 4m. The 85mm would be face only almost. This is why FF is a consideration, as I would grab back some of the distance.

Sorry, don't want it to sound like I just have to get something, but there was definitely something not quite feeling 'comfortable' and I am trying to work out what

    Full frame DOF

Thanks all for the replies. I think it has helped me clarify my position and think it through. It isn't the DOF effect in the end that I want, I believe that it is actually a lens/focal length issue, and I just incorrectly 'thought' that shallower DOF will fix it. (FF fixes all problems doesn't...
